| "My Ancient History" Remembering back.....back....10-20 years ago ???? no....30 years ago now !!!!!! OH MY GOD !!!!! I'm an old guy!!!! Fishing in Narragansett Bay was great in the 70's & 80's. The Blues run every summer, surf casting off Beavertail in Jamestown, night fishing the docks in Newport and wading off Sandy Point, casting for weakfish in the afternoons. Indian Head Rock Jamestown, R.I. I even enjoyed the ice fishing on the ponds in winter. Drilling the holes and setting up base in the middle of 20 tilts with your best buddies was a real hoot. A flag would go up and four guy's would go sliding, scurrying and falling down all over the place, trying to be the first one to the tilt. Capt. Dave Sutton....April 27, 1981 Wow !!! That was a long time ago.....Well, I got started in saltwater fly fishing when we first bought an Orvis Green Mountain combo, that I still have. My best buddy Ron said we were both nuts, but when we went to Quonset Point in the middle of August and hammered the Bluefish, we were convinced. Of course, he caught twice as many as I, but I had twice the fun. You see, Ron was a freshwater fly fisherman for many years, and very good at it. Well, it was all over, and two more saltwater long rodders were born. That was in 1980...... whew!!!!....almost 30 years ago. "Huge Brown" 26 1/2" length...over 6 lbs. We used to make the run to Pulaski, N.Y. to fish for Steelhead and King Salmon in the Salmon river. What a great time those years were. Freezing water, ice flows going by as you try to fish, holding you guides in your bare hands to thaw the ice off them, so you can make a cast. I'm sorry ... I get carried away sometimes... But the fishing was the best. We'd stay at a place called Steelhead Lodge. The owners, Earl & Karen Penny, run a good home-style lodge. There number is 1-315-298-4371 if you should want some more info. The King's about 25 to 35 lbs. would give you all you could handle on a flyrod. Running up and down the river like a nut chasing a fish that jumps waterfalls. The best work-out I ever had. This is where I started my guiding career. "Ron & Dave" October 1984 at Steelhead Lodge Then we tried Flatsfishing............Oh Man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The clear waters of Biscayne Bay, the palm trees, Bones in the winter..... Oh yea!!!!! My first "Flatsboat" A 15" Seasquirt w/ a 50 hp. Mercury Fifteen years have gone by in an instant ...... Well, to make a long story a little short, we made the move in "89" and have zero regrets....ok ....I do miss my hunting spots and some of the great people I left up there. But hey...You're all invited down this winter for the best time of your fishing career. Hope to see you soon. Capt. Dave |
